Steve Morgan, PGA Professional at Golf HQ, shares his thoughts on how understanding the way you learn can help you get more from your golf coaching.
How do you learn best?
"Recently I asked a client whether he was getting value from the coaching tips through this blog. He said he enjoyed them, but didn’t learn particularly well from written text — he preferred pictures and diagrams.
It was a good reminder that, as coaches, one of the things we need to understand is how each golfer learns best."
Different ways of learning:
Some golfers are Visual learners, responding well to demonstrations, diagrams, video analysis and alignment cues. Auditory learners prefer clear explanations, swing thoughts, rhythm and sound cues. Kinaesthetic learners learn through doing: hitting balls, feeling movements, experimenting, and repeating drills. Others prefer reading and writing, benefiting from written instructions, checklists and structured practice plans.
"I once saw a golfer who had actually written his swing thoughts on his shoes with a marker pen so he could see them every time he addressed the ball!
Most of us use a mixture of these approaches, but understanding which methods work best for you can make your practice and coaching much more effective."
Start with a plan:
With summer approaching, it’s a great time to reassess your golf and start with a plan. A lesson can help establish not only what you need to improve, but how you are most likely to learn it.
Book and in-person or video coaching lesson and let us help you identify and work through the learning approach that works best for you.
